3. Activate the students’ background knowledge. Step 2 Pre-reading1. Ask the students to pick out the healthy ways of living from the given pictures in Activity 1.

2. Tell the students how to scan the passage quickly by finding the key words. Make them understand this reading tip and ask them to determine the key words of each picture. 1. Let the students get to know about the pictures.

2. Teach the students the explicit reading tip. And then ask them to use it when reading.Step 3 Reading

1. Read the whole passage quickly and match the pictures with people in the passage.

2. Read the paragraphs one by one to get the detailed information of each paragraph. Complete the different tasks for each paragraph which are progressively designed on degrees of difficulty.

3. Lead the students to analyse the construction of the first paragraph by presenting the question “Has Anna become healthier?” Guide the students to find out the “result” of Anna’s healthy way of life and then the “actions”, and finally the “reasons”. After this, encourage the students to analyse the rest paragraphs in this way by underlining the sentences.

4. Raise the question, “Have actions brought the four people all good results?” After this, ask them to try to give Richard some advice to improve his way of healthy life.

5. Ask the students whether they have problems in understanding the passage.1. Fast reading is designed to let the students get the general idea of the passage and learn to find the information they need.

2. Careful reading helps students understand the passage more specifically.

3. The task is made to help students be aware of the layout of each paragraph by showing them the “thinking map”. And also make a preparation for the writing task.

4. Try to make the students realize it’s important to choose a right way of exercising. And inspire them to think critically towards exercising.

5. To make sure the students have fully understood the passage.Step 4 Post-reading1. Let the students talk about Colin’s healthy way of living in the pattern of “reasons-actions-results”, and encourage them to say something in their own words with the help of some key words.

2. Show the students a series of pictures about Mr. White’s healthy way of living. Ask them to work in groups and have a discussion to decide “reasons-actions-results”.

3. Write a passage about healthy living of Mr. White.1. The whole-class activity is aimed to give the students an example on how to write a passage with the help of pictures, hints and the thinking map.

2. Group work is designed to make the writing task easier and let the students share their different ideas towards the pictures with their partners.
