Step 1: Lead in

1. Introduce the theme “New maritime silk road” and show students the new words “sailor” “navy”.

2. Show the pictures of the statue and memorial of Zheng He, and have students discuss the function of them.

Step 2: Instruction of the key words

1: Listen to the tape and fill blanks of the story.

God always helps those who helps themselves

Long long ago, a group of sailors followed Mr. Zheng to visit the countries along the Atlantic Ocean. They said goodbye to their relatives and set sail for their destinations. At first, everything went well. But 20 days later, some sailors came down with illness. They began to complain about the boring life on the sea. What’s worse, a few days later, the weather changed on the sea. Judging from the wind, Mr. Zheng was aware that a rainstorm was coming. “What should we do?” He wondered. There was no doubt that they had no choice but to fight against the rainstorm. So he told the sailors that if they worked together, nothing could stand in their path. Then all the sailors calmed down to face the rainstorm. As the saying goes, “God a%lways helps those who help themselves”, the rainstorm died away at last. They were safe! The happiness on their face was beyond expression!

2. Instruction of the key words in the story in details.

Show the pictures which are connected with the plot of the story and the key language points in this class.

(1). come down with illness

Task: group work.

Have students fill the blanks with phrases of come and find out the meaning of them in the sentences.

(2). complain v. __________________ n. 抱怨、诉苦

complain (to sb) about /of sth ________________________

make a complaint about /of / against _________________

Exercise:

They complained to the manager about the poor quality.

= They made a complaint of the poor quality to the manager.

(3). judge

① Pair work : show students two pictures of judges and ask them translate the sentences according to the pictures.

The judge showed excellent judg(e)ment in judging the case in the court.

The judge showed excellent judg(e)ment in judging the football match.

(4). Pair work: complete the sentences with phrases of “ aware”
