The next night and many nights thereafter, a kind of unspoken ritual (仪式) took place. As it grew dark, I would take my place in the center of the stoop and begin the evening’s tale. Some nights, in order to taste my victory more completely, I ⑥ . I would stop at the most exciting part of a story by Jack London or Bret Harte, and without warning tell them that that was as far as I had gone in the book and it would have to be continued the following evening. It was not true, of course; but I had to make certain of my new-found power and ⑦ . I enjoyed the long summer evenings until school began in the fall. Other words of mine have been listened to by larger and more fashionable audiences, but for that tough and athletic one that sat close on the stoop outside the candy store, I have an unreasoning love that will last forever.

According to your memory or according to the context

Step Five: Design the blanks by themselves (学生做)

Aimed to remind the students that the blanks should be discourse-oriented instead of grammar-oriented. Understanding the context matters!

Step Six: understand the author’s changing roles from an outsider to an insider

analyze the changing roles 2. What message is conveyed in the passage?

Step seven: Share his experience of becoming an insider (学生做)

Step eight: Analyze the wise choices the author and the other boys make

Scene 1:

He is not good at playing baseball. When the other boys are playing,

he didn’t shut himself in his house

he chose to stand by and watch them.

Scene 2:

Long silence would fall and they would go home one by one,
