Lead in

(Before class, students will be divided into several groups with 4 people in each group.)

1. Begin the class with talking about bicycles in China. Draw students’ attention to Amsterdam, which is called the “City of Bicycles”.

2. Read and learn the vocabulary

3. Draw the students’ attention to the present perfect continuous tense in the text, then students try to find all the examples in it and understand them.

II. Understanding the texts and collecting information

Students look at the title of the passage and guess what the text will talk about. Then listen to the tape and read after it silently. While reading, students try to find out the answers to the following questions (Why Amsterdam is called the “City of Bicycles”? Why is there less traffic in the city? )

Group Task 1:

Students read the passage intensively and try to find out the answers to the detailed questions. Discussion is encouraged to share their answers before checking.

Group Task 2:

Students work in groups to make comparison between the old “white bikes” and the new “white bikes” focusing on the similarities and differences shown on screen.

Group Task 3:

Students work in groups to find out the topic sentences of each paragraph.
