Step1:Lead in

T: I’m your new teacher today. So do you want to know sth. about me? Here

are some sentences. If you think it is right, you can say Yes, Yes, Yes. If it’s

wrong, say No, No, No.

Seventeen years ago, I could teach.

A week ago, I couldn’t speak English.

I couldn’t drive twenty years ago.

Three days ago, I was very short.

Step2: Look and learn

T: Now you have a general idea of me. Let’s look into these sentences again. Here...

1. could/ couldn’t

The verb stem of “could” is ...(can).

The full form of “couldn’t” is ...(could not).

“could” and “couln’t”, they’re both... (情态动词)

So after “could” and “couldn’t”, we should use... (动词原形)

2.ago

T: Let’s look into them again. These four sentences all include a same word ...( ago)

Q: Where does “ago” place in the sentence? Please look into sentence1,2 and 4. And what about sentence3? Can you find the rule?

Lerning tip2: ago表示时间的短语,既可以放在句首,与后面的句子用逗号隔开;也可放在句末。

Exercise: Sentence3: I couldn’t drive twenty years ago.

= Twenty years ago, I couldn’t drive.
