Sudoku

The 200-Year-Old Puzzle

Sudoku, the popu lar puzzle that uses the numbers 1-9, might not be very new. According to some websites, Sudoku is based on the work of Leonard Euler, an 18th-century Swiss mathematician. Euler created “Latin Squares”, a grid in which every number or symbol appears once in each row or column.

In the 1970s a series of puzzles called “Number Place” appeared in a puzzle magazine by an American publisher. The puzzles were similar to Euler’s “Latin Squares”: every number could be used only once in each row or column. In 1984 a Japanese publisher saw the puzzles and was impressed: he made them easier, called them “Sudoku” (meaning “single number” in Japanese) and published them in a book. The puzzles continued to appear in the American magazine and in Japanese books, but nobody showed much interest in them.

That began to change in 1997 when Wayne Gould, a New Zealander working in Hong Kong, saw a Sudoku book in a bookshop and was fascinated by it. In October 2004 he persuaded The Times to publish one of the puzzles.

It was an instant success… and now you can find Sudoku puzzles in most British newspapers, on the Internet, and even on mobile phones. There are also monthly Sudoku magazines and even a Sudoku puzzle on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, where the numbers are read aloud.
