教学方法:Task-based Method

教学过程设计:

Step 1 Lead in

Say: How is our life? Do you think our life is like the straight line or the curved line?(The students may answer: The curved line.) Then say: That’s right. Because everyone will meet some good things and some bad things. What bad things might we meet?

Step 2 Presentation

Show the pictures of the earthquake, the tornado, the flood and a big house fire. Say: They are terrible. Many people will die. When there is a big house fire, what will happen to the family. Show the picture and the sentence They lost everything in the big house fire.

Then ask: What is terrible to you in your life? (Getting ill, losing families and friends, etc.)

And say: When something terrible happens, who will be with you and help you?(Parents, friends, classmates, and even strangers.) We are with you and help you.

Step 3 Read

Firstly show a picture of Jason Glen. Say: He is sad. What happened to him? Then ask the students to read Paragraphs 1 and 2 and answer the questions:

On the first day of school,

what happened to Jason and his family?

what did Jason’s classmates do when they heard the bad news?

Secondly say: The classmates told Jason, “Don’t be afraid. We are with you.” And what else can we say to encourage the others? Summary the beautiful sentences that show care and concern.

Thirdly ask: What help would you offer if Jason was your classmate?(Give food, clothes, money and so on.) Where is the money from? ( My parents/ The pocket money.) But how did Jason’s classmates help him?

Thirdly ask them to read Paragraph 3 and answer the question: The next day, how did the students help Jason? Then check the answers and ask them to guess the meaning of “raise”.

Ask: How did they raise money?(They had a car wash and a cookie sale.) Talk about the differences between the Chinese culture and the western culture.

Fourthly ask them to read paragraph 4 and answer the question: Yesterday, what happened?

Fifthly ask them to choose the right pictures according to the time.

Step 4 Retell the story

Ask the students to retell the story in groups of four in the time order. Each group member retells what happened on a certain day and the fourth member uses his imagination to predict what Jason will do in the future.

Step 5 Discuss

Ask them to watch the video and find: What can you find in the video? Help them to know that we can also do small things to help others. Ask them to think and discuss what help they offer their parents, friends and teachers. Then tell them that even the smallest effort counts.

Step 6 Summary

Ask: What have we learned today?

Then conclude: 1. The ways to help others (Show care and concern, donate, raise money.)

2. Tell a story in the time order(On the first day of school, the next day, yesterday.)

3. Know the cultural differences.

Say: There are many people in need. So always be ready to help others. Maybe sometimes you also need help. But don’t be afraid. Because we are with you.
