A Using adjectives

Step 1 Lead-in

T: Today we’ll learn Grammar of Unit 8.Last class, we learnt poems about two pets, what are they? What does the writer think of his dog? What about the goldfish?

Learn adjectives:

The dog is very clever. The goldfish is quiet. They are wonderful pets.

Step 2 Presentation

1. How to use adjectives

T: Today we’ll learn how to use adjectives.

★ We use adjectives to describe people or things.

eg. Rabbits have long ears. Rabbits’ ears are long.

In the two sentences, “ears” is a noun. We use “long” to describe the word.

★ We can put an adjective before a noun or after a linking verb.

eg. A lazy cat is on the sofa. The cat on the sofa is lazy.

In the first sentence, “cat” is a noun. So we put the adjective “lazy” before “cat”.

In the second sentence, “is” is a linking verb. So we put the adjective “lazy” after “is”.

2. Linking verbs

T: We are quite familiar with some linking verbs, such as:

be become feel get grow keep look seem smell sound taste turn

We can use adjectives after these linking verbs.

T: Look at the picture, can you use linking verbs to make some sentences?

How does the cat? He looks fat /cute.

How does the cat feel? He seems/ feels hungry.

What about the food? The food smells good. It tastes delicious.
