pay既可以作不及物动词, 也可以作及物动词, 意为“付给, 付出”。
pay作不及物动词时, 有“给……付报酬”之意; pay作及物动词时, 意为“付钱”, 此时主语通常为表示人的名词或代词。
e.g. This job pays well. Did Carl pay the milkman today?
pay和pay for都表示“付钱”, 但用法有所不同。当表示向某人付款时, 通常用pay, 后面接表示受款人的名词, 即pay sb.; 当表示为所买的东西付钱时, 通常用pay for, 后面接表示货物的名词, 即pay for sth.。
e.g. Did you pay the boy when he gave you the newspaper?
那个男孩给你报纸的时候，你付钱给他了吗？
How much did you pay for the book? 那本书你付了多少钱？
