Teaching procedures:

Ⅰ. Warm-up & pre-reading

Ss will watch the video Chicago Will Host 50th Anniversary Celebration in July 2018.

Ss will see the logo of Special Olympics, find out what it is for in the textbook and do a quiz to learn more about it.

Pictures of volunteers will help present the topic on volunteering.

Ⅱ. While-reading

Part I Skimming

Ss will number the paragraphs and skim for the main point of each paragraph according to the key words.

Part II Scanning

Ss will get the information about when and where the Games were held according to the logo of the 2007 Special Olympics World Games and read paragraph two to find out who can be the athletes and what sports athletes can take part in.

Ss will read paragraph three and four to know what volunteers did for the Games and what Liu Ming volunteered as.

Ss will read paragraph one and five to find out how volunteers felt and Liu Ming’s feelings.

Ss will read paragraph four to learn something about the athlete Li Hai from Liu Ming’s description and answer some true or false questions.

Ⅲ. Post-reading

Ss will tell the basics about Special Olympics according to the key words on the blackboard.

Ss will finish part B4 on page 83 and check the answers.

Ss will have a discussion and try to say something about Liu Ming and Li Hai with the help of some questions.

Ss will make a dialogue in groups of two or three to show Liu Ming’s and Li Hai’s experiences and feelings.

Ss will help Liu Ming complete a letter to let more people know Special Olympics and call on them to do something for it.

Ss will discuss about what Liu Ming got from his volunteering experience and what else we can get from volunteering.

Ss will discuss about the reasons why special athletes can take part in events similar to those in the Olympics.

Ⅳ. Homework

1. Read the report fluently.

2. Watch the video 8 Reasons Why You Should Volunteer to learn more about volunteering benefits.

Ⅴ.Reflection (to be written immediately after class)
