3. Teaching Importance and difficulties:

Get students to know about the Special Olympics and the special athletes.

Enable students to apply for the position of a volunteer for the Special Olympics.

4. Settings:

6 groups, 5 students in each.

Students are grouped heterogeneously for language and understanding levels so that they can be provided with frequent opportunities for interaction and discussion.

Learning Goals:

1. Knowledge Object:

Students will be able to master the new expressions.

Students will be able to introduce the Special Olympics Games.

2. Ability Focus:

Students will be able to apply for the position of being a volunteer for the Special Olympics Games.

3. Moral Aims:

Cultivate students’ interest in the Special Olympics Games.

Arouse students’ love for people in need.

Teaching Procedures & Activities:

Step1 Lead in (4’)

1. Lead in the topic by playing a short video clip about a mom and her daughter with intellectual disabilities who became a Special Olympics athlete later. The video ends with the sentence ‘Thank you mom, for fighting for our Special Olympics athletes.’ (2’)

→ A student comes to the front and gives a daily speech introducing Special Olympics and the special athletes. (2’)

→ The teacher then introduces the topic.

Today we get to learn more about the special athletes and the volunteers by reading a report.

① The teacher asks students to open their books and find out the answer to the following questions within 5 seconds.

-- What is this report about?

(It’s about volunteering for the Special Olympics World Games.)
