II Teaching Important and Difficult Points:

This unit seeks to give students a better understanding of the great scientist and their way of progress. The chosen teaching material reveals the sex discrimination suffered by Marie Curie and Jane Goodall during their way of success. Therefore, this lesson focuses on guiding students to familiarize this topic through two topic-based reading passages. Besides, it is also important to inform students of the reading skills to infer the deep meaning of the passage. Some students may find it difficult to analyze and solve the sex discrimination issues, which is relatively unfamiliar for the students of this age.

III Analysis of the Target Students and Teaching Materials

The target students are senior 1 students, who generally have a vague understanding about the gender equality. However, they will show great interest towards this popular global issue in modern society. The teaching materials including two topic-based passages about greatest female figures should be used to arouse Ss’ awareness of gender equality and improve Ss’ discourse analysis skills.

V Teaching Procedures and Intentions

STEP ONE: Warming Up(5 mins)

Teacher informs Ss of the learning objectives, which is designed to stimulate Ss’ metacognition to regulate their learning activities.

Teacher gives a short introduction of the source of teaching materials and asks Ss to read aloud the introduction and translate into Chinese.

Intention: this activity creates an atmosphere for the following learning & discussion about the great female and their achievements.

STEP TWO: Passage One about Jane Goodall(15 mins)

Teacher asks students to skim the passage and generalize each paragraph with one word.
