Being Senior Two students, they have reached the Eighth level of English Course Standards and a good command of reading and writing skills. In addition, they are interested in traditional Chinese arts and familiar with them after years’ study. However, for lack of exposure to the English editions of traditional Chinese arts, most students are only capable of introducing traditional Chinese culture in simple English.

Teaching aims

The teaching design is based on the New Curriculum Standards and the Key Competencies for English as a Foreign Language (英语学科核心素养) in Chinese senior high school. At the end of this period, students are expected to master the following competencies:

Linguistic Competence (语言能力)

Appreciate and analyze the ideographic means in the text.

Understand the reading material about the traditional Chinese arts.

Apply English language knowledge to writing English composition integratively and skillfully.

Cultural Awareness(文化意识)

Understand and appreciate the beauty of language and the profound implication.

Raise the awareness of transmitting the socialistic culture in Chinese characteristics and be confident in Chinese culture.

Have the ability to describe the Chinese cultural phenomenon in English.

Thinking Quality (思维品质)

Recognize the primary and secondary relations among various information by analyzing and comparing the reading material.

Analyze the interconnectedness and differences among all kinds of information objectively.

According to the information obtained in class, summarize the similar elements and thus form the new concept - the way to introduce traditional Chinese culture and the way to recommend gifts. Consequently, complete the writing task by applying the new concept - to recommend traditional Chinese gift to foreigners.

Learning Ability (学习能力)

Choose the suitable information according to the learning need.

Be capable of self-study, cooperation study and draw inferences.

Be able of communicating in English, taking parts in classroom activities and finally completing the writing task.
