（2）用于含有when或while引导的时间状语从句的主句或从句中。

（3）过去进行时与一般过去时的区别
过去进行时和一般过去式都表示过去发生的事情，但过去进行时强调动作的持续性，一般过去时表示过去的时间里所发生的动作，但动作往往已完成。
Eg : He was reading a novel the whole day. 他一整天都在看一本小说。
He read a novel last night. 昨晚他看了一本小说。
（二）when和while引导时间状语从句（1）when所引导的时间状语从句即可指时间点，也可指时间段，因此在when引导的时间状语从句中，动词可以是非延续性动词，也可以是延续性动词。
eg:When the girl came in,her mother was watching TV.当这个女孩进来的时候，她妈妈正在看电视。（when所引导的时间状语指时间点，come是非延续性动词）
When we were walking in the park,we met Mary.当我们在公园散步时，遇见了玛丽。（2）由when引导的时间状语从句，如主句用过去进行时、从句用一般过去时，则表示一个动作正在进行的时候另一个动作（突然）发生了，强调后一动作发生的突然性。
eg:A boy was walking along the street when it began to rain.一个男孩正在沿街边散步，突然天开始下起雨来。（强调雨下得很突然）
While a boy was walking along the street,it began to rain.当一个男孩沿街边散步的时候，天开始下起雨来。（只表明下雨的事实，不强调突然性）
2.While的用法（1）while所引导的时间状语只指时间段，因此，在while引导的时间状语从句中，动词必须是延续性动词。eg: While he ________________,his mother came in.当他读书时，他妈妈进来了。（2）当从句和主句的的动作都是延续的或同时发生的，两句都用过去进行时的时候，多用while引导。eg: While Mary ________________a letter ,the children were playing outsaid.玛丽写信时，孩子们正在外面玩耍。
