III. Teaching Procedures

Step I Lead-in

1. Teacher asks students some questions“What’s the weather like today?” “Do you like the weather?” .

2. T shows a video about the storm. After that, T asks “How is the weather in the video ?” “Do you like the weather?” “Do you think the storm is a good thing or a bad thing for us?”. Then T says “The storm is a bad thing. It can bring us some problems. The houses, the trees will fall down. The people will lose money, even their lives.”

Step II Before -reading

1. Lead-in

T says “As we know, in summer, there are many rainstorms happening in the world every year. There is a story about a storm happening in America. In 2011, a heavy rainstorm hit the state, Alabama. Now, please look at the map of America. This is the state. It is beautiful and quiet. But after the storm, the state was in a mess. Here is a family. Now, look at the little boy. Ben and his parents went through the storm. Do you want to know more about the story? please open your books, and turn to page 35.”

2. Prediction

T asks Ss to look at the photo of the passage and then asks “What can you see in the photo?”

T asks Ss to look at the title of the passage and asks “What does the writer think of the storm?” “Can you find out the writer’s opinion in the passage?” T leads Ss to find out the topic sentence of the story.

3. Discussion

T asks Ss “How can a storm bring people closer together?”

Step III While-reading

1. Fast-reading

(1) T asks “How many paragraphs of the passage are there?”

(2) T says “According to the time order of the story, I divide it into 3 parts: before the storm, during the storm and after the storm. “ Then T asks Ss to read the passage quickly to find out which paras are the first part, the second part, the third one.
