Analysis of the teaching material:

The reading material consists of two articles. Article 1 tells us the story of Adam Rouse. He told us how he got addicted to taking drugs and how he stopped. From article 2, we’ll know what cocaine is and how it does harm to people.

In the part of pre-reading, an activity about words is designed to help students learn the expressions related with drugs. While-reading part includes two sub-sections, the first of which requires students to do the activities by themselves before class, while the second allows students to discuss in a group as well as finish it on their own. The activities in the first section are from students’ book, which are modified in order to better develop students’ reading skills, like skimming and scanning.

During the second section, task 1 is about the styles of the two passages and the tenses used in the two articles. Activity 2&3 aim to let students get the framework of how to write a narration and an exposition. In post-reading, students should be able to retell the story of Adam and show their attitudes towards drugs.

Through the study of this part, students can not only learn some information about drugs but also learn how to organize a narration and an exposition and improve their ability of analyzing texts. Besides, students should be aware of the dangers of drugs and stay away from drugs as well as anything that may make them addicted.

Analysis of the target students:

Students in grade one have difficulty in understanding the reading material if there are too many unfamiliar words in the text. Thus, the teacher made a video, in which words related to drugs are explained. Freshmen also have to develop their reading skills, for which they are required to finish four activities. Furthermore, students should know the styles and tenses of different passages. The teacher designed three additional activities to help students understand the passage better. At last, adolescents in senior one should know the dangers of drugs and stay away from drugs as well as anything that may make them addicted.

Teaching aims:

I. Knowledge and skills

1. Enable students to revise the following words: addictive, cannabis, crack cocaine,, drug addict, danger, increase, inject, needle, powerful, reduce

Enable students to master the following phrases:blood pressure, heart attack, heart rate, break into

2. Train students’ reading ability and the ability of analyzing the texts;

3. Train students’ ability of compare different styles of texts and help students master how to write different styles of texts.

1. Train students’ reading ability through individual work;

2. Train students’ communicating ability through group discussion;

III. Emotion and values

1. Try to raise students’ cooperation awareness in their study by group work;

2. Help students know the dangers of drugs and stay away from drugs;
