TEACHING GOALS
1 to make students know some basic information of the three great philosophers in ancient China: Confucius, Mencius and Mozi along with their major teachings.
2 to develop students’ cooperating abilities as well as their self-study abilities.
3 to promote students’ to think about what modern people can learn from the three great philosophers so as to develop their independent thinking motivation.
TEACHING IMPORTANT AND DIFFICULT POINTS
Important points: knowing of some basic information of the three great philosophers in ancient China: Confucius, Mencius and Mozi.
Difficult points: How to give opinions of the topic – what can modern people learn from the three great philosophers.
TEACHING PROCEDURES
Step 1: Lead-in
On the screen the teacher shows some people who wear unusual clothes and make students answer the following questions:
If you like this on the street or at school, what will happen?
But in ancient China there was a great philosopher who liked to wear unusual clothes. Do you know who he is?
Step 2: Words’ revision
Make students read the following sentences and translate them quickly. Pay attention to the words which are in another colour.
1 It’s said that girls’ rooms are always in order. Unfortunately, that is not true for my wife.
2 After I made the sentence above, my wife said angrily, “You have lost your principle.”
3 But after a moment, she said to me gently, “How do you want to bring up your baby?”
4 Looking at her, I answered, “Well, I always have a belief that a baby should be brought up in a peaceful and harmonious environment.”
5 And I also believe that after we found the atmosphere of love, our baby will also learn to love others.
Step 3: Fast reading
Make students read the passage quickly silently and try to find out the answers of the following questions by themselves.
1 What was the situation of ancient China?
2 Whose influence has been the greatest?
3 How long has Confucius lived for?
4 How long was Chinese society was influenced by Confucius’s ideas?
