Step 1 Lead in and warm up

brainstorm some means of transportation, then show some pictures of transport and let students say the names.

Ask students if they have seen a pedicab in our city. Then introduce Beijing and introduce the topic of the article, Get Around in Beijing.

Check students’ homework, which is to preview the vocabulary of this module. Use a filling-blanks game to check if they have previewed the words.

Step 2. Reading

Listening: listen to the recording of the article and scan for the main points: advantages and disadvantages of the means of transport.

Scanning: ask students to read the article and scan for the main idea of each part. Then ask them to think if the listed sentences are true or false.

Skimming: ask students to read the article again and think about the questions on the screen.

Summary of the article: Ask students to fill some blanks in a passage which is a summary of the article. Guide students to learn some ways of giving advice.

Step 3. Discussion

1. Show the pictures of the heavy traffic in Beijing and ask students why traffic trams always happen. Ask them to discuss about it. Work in pairs or in groups.

2. Ask some students to show their ideas.

Step 4. Homework

Ask students to write an article on what should we do to solve the problem of traffic jams, using the words and phrases listed on the blackboard.
