【Analysis of the Teaching Material】

Teaching Material: The content of this lesson is from New Standard English for Senior High (published by foreign language teaching and research press), Book 8 Module 6 The Tang Poems, which introduces some basic knowledge of the Tang poems and some famous poets of home and abroad. By studying this module, it is important for the students to understand the great achievements made in poetry in the Tang Dynasty, but it is just more important for them to realize that there are something that can be done to make our brilliant culture (Classical Chinese Poetry) go global. For this period, it starts from listening to speaking.

Listening: There are two parts in listening. The first part is a general introduction of the four interviews, which is clipped by the teacher, aiming to train the students to listen for general information. The second part is to listen to the four interviews one by one and fill in the blanks, which intends to train the students to listen for detailed information.

Speaking consists of group work and pair work, which is based on the listening part and the reading part in this Module. It aims to enable the students to learn to appreciate poems and more than that, the teacher also intends to arouse students’ awareness of cross-cultural communication. Thus, a great translator--Mr. Xu Yuanchong will be introduced with a micro-lesson made by the teacher, then two of his translated poems.

Module Position:

The Listening & Speaking is based on Warming-up and Reading, which support this lesson very well including words, phrases and basic knowledge of Tang Poems.

【Analysis of the Students】

Over two years of English study in senior high, the students have accumulated a certain language foundation with certain listening and speaking skills. And also, students’ ability of summary, analysis, reasoning has got certain development. Yet still for most of the students, when it comes to listening and speaking, they may lack of confidence and interest as well. So this lesson will not only pay attention to the development of students’ listening and speaking ability, but also guide the students to learn to observe and summarize by means of discussion and presentation, which will greatly improve students’ interest in learning a language, enhance the confidence of using a language.

【Teaching Aims】

To develop the students’ abilities of listening and speaking.

To enable the students to learn to talk about poems and to appreciate poems.

To arouse students’ awareness of cross-cultural communication.

【The Important and Difficult Points】

The important points:

To practice students’ listening and speaking abilities.

To learn to talk about poems and to appreciate poems.

The difficult points:

To enable the students to listen attentively for detailed information.

To encourage students to talk about poems and to appreciate poems freely.

How to highlight key points and break through difficult points?

I will integrate flexible teaching methods according to students and different activities, instruct the students to adopt different learning methods actively and confidently. Besides, the tasks are designed and adjusted so as to be in line with students’ actual ability.
