Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Warm-up

The teacher starts the lesson with an English song—Auld Lang Syne. Ask the students “Can you understand the lyrics in the song? Why can’t we understand them?”

Tell students that English is changing all the time and they will learn a passage concerning English and its history.

Step 2 Reading strategy

Ask the students to go through the Reading strategy find the ways to read a history article.

Step 3 Skimming

Students are allowed several minutes to skim the text. Their skimming is based on the task of questions on page 22 concerning the general idea of the text.

1. What is the article about?

2. What are the three kinds of English discussed in the article?

3. In what way is English still changing?

Step 4 Detailed reading]

Ask the students to pay attention to the subtitles and divide the text into several parts.

The text can be easily divided into 4 parts considering the subtitles, namely, Introduction, Old English, Middle English and Modern English.

Part1 Introduction

Read part 1 and find answer to the question “Why does English have so many rules that confuse people?”

Because it is made up of the grammar and vocabulary that people from different countries and cultures brought with them to Britain.

Part2 Old English

Ask students to find and say something about the following word.

Celtic— (L8) a language spoken by people in Britain before the middle of the 5th century

the Angles and the Saxons— (L9) two Germanic groups from the European mainland
