Methodology: task-based approach

Teaching aids: multimedia

Teaching procedure:

1. Lead-in:

Step 1: At the beginning of the class, tell a story about a farmer and diamond to arouse students' interest and attention. The story is as follows:

There was a farmer who was happy and content. He was happy because he was content. He was content because he was happy. One day a wise man came to him and said, “If you had a diamond the size of your thumb, you could have your own city. If you had a diamond the size of your fist, you could probably own your country.” And then he went away. That night the farmer couldn’t sleep. He was unhappy and he was discontent. He was unhappy because he was dis-content and discontent because he was unhappy.

The next morning he sold his farm and went to seek diamonds. He looked all over Africa and couldn’t find any. He looked all through Europe and couldn’t find any. When he got to Spain, he was emotionally, physically and financially broken. He finally threw himself into the River and committed suicide.

Back home, the man who had bought his farm was taking care of the farm. He suddenly noticed a stone sparkling. He picked up the stone and went home. That afternoon the wise man came and saw the stone sparkling. He said, “That is a diamond. I can recognize it.” The man said, “I picked up from the farm.”

They went to the farm again and found that the farm was indeed covered with acres and acres of diamonds.

Step 2: Propose question to students:

What does the diamond symbolize in our life?

What can we learn from the farmer?

What happiness means to the farmer and his friend?

After answering these questions, students are supposed to have a discussion on where happiness lies. And then introduce the two articles on happiness.

2. Reading:

Step 1: Extensive reading

Students are supposed to get through the two passages and answer following questions:

Is the writer a teenager or an adult?
