Step 1 Lead- in:

Before class, ask students to search on the Internet or in books about famous Chinese and foreign classic literature, Charles Dickens and his works.

T:Today,we’ll learn the Reading text about appreciating classic literature. First, look at the screen, learn about some famous Chinese classics and foreign classics

Step 2 :Fast reading:

Ask students to skim the essay and try to find answers to the following three questions:

1. What is classic literature?

2. Who is Charles Dickens?

3. Who is the main character in the novel Great Expectations?

Step 3 Careful reading for general ideas:

Ask students to scan the essay and try to find out the structure of the text:

Part one: information about _____________.

Part two: information about __________.

Part three: information about ________________________.

Step 4 Reading strategy:

1. What does a persuasive essay try to do?

2. What’s the writer’s point of view in this essay?

3. How does the author try to convince the reader?

Key: 1. To convince the reader to adopt a certain point of view.

2. To persuade us to appreciate classic literature.

3. At the start, she asks us to change our minds about classic literature. Then she gives us interesting facts about Charles Dickens and his book, Great Expectations, which makes us want to read the book at the end of the essay.
