To help students understand the structure of the film review.

To help students understand what should be included in a film review and how to write a film review..

To help students write a film review in groups and present it.

The first two aims are designed to help students to get the structure of the passage and get some necessary writing skills. We can call it a process of input. The third aim is to help students develop their ability of cooperating, critical thinking, writing and speaking. This is output. As we all know, students can only learn English by using it.

Teaching important points and difficult points:

The important and difficult points in this lesson are how to improve students’ ability of reading and writing. Since this section is designed to give students a chance to write a film review, I think, being able to understand how to write one is among the important skills students must master.

The second important point is to help students develop their critical thinking. According to curriculum standard critical thinking is an important ability students should develop in senior high school.

While analyzing the passage, I found that writing a comment on the film is a bit difficult for students, so I will instruct students to pay more attention to the second part (the writer’s comments) of the passage. Writing is always difficult for our students. How can I achieve all these important and difficult points? I will make it clear later in my teaching procedures.

Part 2 Analysis of the students:

I do not know exactly what the students here in Jiangan High School are like, but generally students at this age in high school usually like to listen and think, while they don’t like to show or present themselves unless we teachers provide them with certain situations and motivate them. Besides, films can arouse their interests, but they know little about film review.

Part 3 Teaching methodology and aids

I’ll adopt Communicative Approach, Task-based teaching approach and Multi-media assistant teaching approach to involve the students in my class, because just as many studies discover: involve me and I learn.

Part 4 Teaching procedures

I have designed the following steps to achieve the aims:

Step 1 Lead-in & pre-reading

Show students some film posters to arouse their interest in this lesson.

Ask students five questions about the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Through answering these questions, students will get a general idea of the plot of the film.

Step 2 While-reading

Activity 1 skimming

In this activity students go through the film review quickly and find out how the passage is organized. Divide the passage into three parts and conclude the main idea of each part. By doing this, students will get a rough understanding of the structure of a film review.

Activity 2 critical thinking

After students gain necessary structure and information of the film review, it’s time to develop their critical thinking. And with what they have learned they may have a strong desire to voice their opinion. I’ll provide students with another film review on the same movie and ask students to compare it with the one in the textbook. Students will be encouraged to tell which one they like better and the reasons. Through this activity students may know better about what a good film review is like and through discussion they may achieve more about what parts a film review should include. After all, two minds are better than one and one will be enlightened from the discussion.

Step 3 Write a film review (post-reading)

Activity 1 learn writing skills

Though students have got a rough understanding of the structure of the film review, they still needs more writing skill instructions, so I’ll give them specific tips on writing each part of the film review, especially the part of making comments, which is one of my important points and difficult points. I will help the students to find out how the writer comment on the highlights and drawbacks of the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone so that they can understand how to make comments on their own.
