Important points and difficult points:

The project in this unit is designed to help students learn and use English through doing group work. The purpose of this section is to help students use what they have learnt to finish an oral report by working together. By doing the project, students will have a better understaning of different colors in different cultures.

Analysis of the students:

The students in this class are made up of the Tibetan students who are quite poor in speaking English. As senior three students, they have a certain ability to read. Some students are not active in class, and some students are not brave enough to voice their opinions. Therefore, I should adapt the lesson to each of them and arrange various kinds of activities to let each of them have more chances to practise English and involve actively in the lesson, thus to make some improvement.

Teaching methods:

Highlights of student activities:

Students use what they have learnt to finish an oral report by working together. By doing the project, students will have a better understaning of different colors in different cultures.

Teaching Procedures:

The reading material is a magazine article about colors and cultures. Students may use the background information to do research on the color and prepare an oral report about the color they choose, in which they may think about what the color symbolizes in different cultures with the help of the information mentioned in the text.

In the course of doing the project, they will discuss both positive and negative meanings of the color. They are required not only to search for as much information about color as they can, but also to choose useful information for an oral report. They are expected to assign roles to each group member, cooperate by working together, and fulfill each part of the assignment.

Step I: Leading in

Show students groups of pictures about colors.

Step II: Reading comprehension of the text

1. Present students a question to think about, collect their opinions and guide them to find the answer in the reading article.

2. Collect students understanding of the question and help them to complete the conclusion.

3. Encourage students to predict what is to follow in this article.

4. Ask students to skim the first sentence of each paragraph for a general idea so as to check their guess.

5. After showing students structure of the whole article, ask students to scan the specific paragraph to answer questions involving detailed information.

Step III: Recording of information

Get students to complete the chart with information about the colours mentioned in the text.

Step IV: Preparing and presenting oral reports

Step V: Homework
