Step one: Lead-in

Which number do you like better, 444 or 666? (Ss: 666.)

We do not want to say 死 or die directly, because it might upset or embarrass others. We often prefer to use a polite word or phrase instead. This is called euphemism. Euphemism is a polite way to say something that is embarrassing or unpleasant. To make a euphemism, you replace words that are considered harsh (cruel or unkind) or offensive (rude) with other words that are vaguer (not clear in meaning) and less direct.

Step Two: Presentation

Read the following sentences and guess the meaning of the words or phrases in red.

His grandfather passed away last week. The funeral will be held this Friday.

The TV set has been used for 20 years and is now on its last legs. I have to buy a new one this Sunday.

It is polite to gives seats to a senior citizen or a pregnant woman in a crowded bus.

The school is for people who are physically challenged.

This passage is written in big characters. It is convenient for the visually challenged.

After the death of her only son, the old lady was not all there.

Summary: T: From these examples, we can know that euphemisms are used to express taboos or very sensitive subjects such as about death, the elderly and physical disabilities.

We shouldn’t look down upon sanitary worker. Thanks to their hard work, we can enjoy the blue sky and a clean city life.
