Process writing theory (to help the students write in an organized way)

Cooperative learning approach (to encourage the students learn from each other).

Teaching aids:

The “Smart Class” interactive teaching system.

The blackboard & chalks.

Teaching time: one period (40 minutes)

Teaching procedures:

Step 1. Greetings & Lead-in

1. Greet the students and have a short conversation with the students to get them involved.

2. Lead the student to the topic with a short video clip introducing Chinese calligraphy.

Step 2. Pre-writing

1. Encourage the students to brainstorm the features of a good composition. Then the teacher summarizes and shows the elements of a good composition to the students.

2. Share with the students the five stages of process writing and the teacher will help them with the writing by following these stages.

Step 3. Drafting

1. Assign the students to work in pairs and figure out the basic information for writing the composition, such as the layout, proper tenses, useful vocabulary, etc. If necessary, the teacher will add some useful vocabulary.

2. As this stage is not the focus of the period, the teacher presents the students with a first draft covering the key points but using simple sentences. Remind the students to follow the example next time in their own writing

Stage 4. Revising

1. Elicit the students to brainstorm their approaches to polishing a composition and the teacher shares some frequently used strategies.

2. The students work in groups polishing a part of the first draft distributed to them. Then each group will hand in their group work with the smart pad.
