Teaching focus:

The students should:

1. identify different English accents.

2. know that language is used to communicate with one another.

Possible challenge:

Students may have trouble identifying different accents while doing listening.

Teaching procedures:

Step I Lead-in

Have the studentes watch a video clip on the debating between Liu Xin and Trish Regan. This part is about five minutes to draw the students’ attention and let them realise the importance of mastering a foreign language. On the other hand, the students can experience the Ameican accent of English over the 5-minute period.

Step II Different accents

1.The teacher leads the students to talk about differnt English accents and at the same time gives tips to them.

2. Let the students listen to six people talking and try to identify their accents.

Step III Different concepts

1. The teacher let the students understand the concepts of the first language, second language and a foreign language.

2. Name some of the countrties that belong to the three groups above.

Step IV Different methods

1. Have the students talk about the best method to learn a foreign language according to thier own experience.

2. The teacher then summarizes opinions and shows the SMART rule to the students .

Step V Some body language

1. Work in paris and discuss whant messages the body language communicates.

2. Choose one and act it out with your partner.
