Ⅱ. Analysis of the target students

The target students are Senior Two students, who have got familiar with the topic “Natural Disasters” and disaster-related vocabulary through the previous lessons of this unit. Besides, they have acquired certain on-stage presentation skills through plenty of practices in previous lessons. Yet, they haven’t developed the awareness to give quality feedback and evaluation to others’ presentations, which may prevent them from developing critical and independent thinking skills.

Ⅲ. Important points and teaching difficulties

1. How to guide students to give a presentation on certain topics by piecing together the vocabulary and background information related to the topic of natural disasters will be the important point in this lesson.

2. Some students may have difficulty giving quality feedback and evaluation to the on-stage presentations from other groups from different angles. So it’s necessary that certain evaluation instructions should be given to students.

Ⅳ. Teaching Procedures (Ss=students)

Step 1 Lead-in

1. Introduce the topic by showing earthquake-related pictures of Wenchuan, Ya’an and Yushu.

2. Ss are asked to talk more about Nepal’s earthquake based on recent news.

3. The theme “natural disasters” is introduced.

Step 2 Fast-reading

Summarize the main ideas.

Step 3 Careful-reading

Answers the questions to better understand the text.

1. What kinds of damage will natural disasters cause?

2. Why is nature turning on us?

3. What kinds of people are most likely to be the victims of natural disasters? Why?

4. Why are volcanoes and earthquakes more dangerous now?

5. What could be the biggest threat to the planet in the future?

6. What is the journalist’s attitude towards the future?
