Teaching key point and difficult point:

Key point: the method of constructing and organizing ideas.

Difficult point: to help Ss apply the method of organizing ideas to their writing process.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1. Lead-in: watch a short video about carbon cycling on the earth.

The short video mainly talks about the how carbon cycles on the earth, keeps the earth in a stable state, how human breaks the cycle and the solution to it.

Step 2. Analyze the solution part of the video script. (Individual work)

Underline all the solutions that the author gives to remove carbon from the atmosphere.

So these animals not only need to stop putting carbon in the atmosphere, but also get carbon out of the atmosphere. They found one way to remove carbon is to grow more plants. They could stop cutting down trees, or raise livestock in ways that can help restore(恢复) grass. Another way is to let plants suck up(吸收) carbon from the atmosphere but then burn them for energy and then trapping(困住) the carbon they emit(排放) underground. They can also build machines to suck air form the atmosphere and filtrate out the carbon, but they haven’t figure out how to do this fast enough. There are many ways these animals can tweak the cycle to suck carbon out of the atmosphere. A combination of them is probably the best way forward. But first, these animals need to figure out how to stop putting it there in the first place.

Ss share the solutions given in the passage:

How to remove carbon from the atmosphere?

One way: plants

- grow more plants

- stop cutting down trees

- raise livestock in a grass-restoring way

Another way: settle carbon

- use plants, burn and trap underground

- build machines to filtrate

Step 3. How to organize ideas?

Present the practice writing topic about endangered animals on the screen. Similar to the sample passage, encourage Ss to come up with more ideas and organize ideas in a similar way.
