Teaching procedures

Lead in

Show students several pictures which look different when looked from the far and the near. Give students time to discuss what these pictures are when looking from the far and the near.

Prediction

Show three pictures and some clues about this novel and then give students time to predict the plot of this novel.

Reading

Step 1

Divide the whole novel into 3 parts and students should work in group of 3 or 4, each student just needs to read one part of the story. Group members should work together to figure out the main idea of this novel.

Step 2

What’s more, in order to help students have a better understanding of this novel, several questions are prepared for them to be explored.

Step 3

Explore these three question which are about the engineer’s mood one by one together with students.

Step 4

When these questions are explored by students, the plot and varying line which is about the engineer’s mood will be presented on the blackboard.

Step 5

Since students have a rough understanding of this novel, they are supposed to find all clues about the far and the near that are referred in this novel and then finish a corresponding chart.
