Warming up: Students enjoy a song named I Want to be with You and when it plays, fill in the blanks of the lyrics. (The blanks are about the modal verbs.)

Lead-in: Students review the modal verbs that they have learned in middle school. Then finish a sentence by using different modal verbs and feel the differences in meaning.

Presentation:

A. Introduce the definition and characters of modal verbs through sentences.

Definition: 情态动词表示说话人的某种感情或语气,对某一动作或状态的某种态度,表示“需要;可以;必须;应当”等意义。

Characters: 情态动词不能单独作谓语,后面只能接不带to的动词不定式(即动词原形),但ought to,have to除外。

e.g. He will late. ( )

People may to give children lucky money.( )

I have to buy a new cellphone. ( )

情态动词没有人称和数的变化。

e.g. I can do it. He can do it. We can do it.

有些情态动词有一般式和过去式的变化,但这不是区分时间的主要标志。

e.g. can--could may--might shall--should will--would
