Teaching the key and difficulty points

Learn something about band.

Develop students’ listening skill.

Preparation

The English textbook and a tape recorder.

Teaching procedures

Step Ⅰ Lead-in and do activity 1a.

Greet the class and show them a picture to lead in the topic and do activity 1a.

Give students several minutes to describe their favorite singers or musicians and finish chart 1. Then invite some students to give us a report.

Step Ⅱ Presentation

Teach activity 1b&1c

These two parts are designed to train students’ listening skill by introducing a band. Call students’ attention to the picture and ask students what they can see in it and what the people are doing.

Read the instructions together with the class to make them know what to do in these two activities.

Play the tape twice to finish 1b. The first time, students listen and distinguish Alex’s and Dave’s opinions about the band.

The second time, students check the answers by themselves.

Then , ask a student to show his or her answers and we check the answers together.

Play the tape twice again to do activity 1c. Students should take some notes to complete the chart. Later ,play the tape one more time for students to check their answers.

Prompt students to make a description about the conversation to lead to the topic about the kinds of music. And show them some pieces of music to let them guess what kind of music it is.( pop, rock, classical, rap and country)

Step Ⅲ Practice

After showing them some pieces of music, ask them some questions like these: What kind of music do you like? Why do you listen to it? How does it make you feel?

Ask them to work in groups to interview their group members about their favorite music, and fill in chart 2. Give students several minutes to do this task. As they work, move around the room checking the progress and offering language support as needed.

Finally, invite some students to present their work.

Step Ⅳ Summary

In this class, we mainly learned how to talk about one’s favorite singers or musicians. Through some listening and speaking practice, students mastered the target language.

Step Ⅴ Homework

Ask your parents what kind of music they listen to and why. How does the music make them feel? And finish chart 2 on your paper.
