PPT. Shadow puppets. Shadow play screens. Flash lights.

*Teaching scene:

The teaching scene will be divided into two main parts.

In the first part, it is more like a science lesson. The teacher and the students talk about the scientific knowledge of the light, light source and the shadow.

In the second part, the students will become shadow players. They tell stories through the “Shadow Play”.

*Teaching activities:

#Lead-in activity (different meanings of “light”):

Present an English word “light” on the PPT. Lead the students to know its different meanings. The students will master the word “light” in different situations by completing a cloze test.

#Integrated Activity (reviewing light, light source and shadow)

The students have already learned the knowledge of the light, light source and shadow. The teacher can let the students to discuss in groups and talk about the scientific knowledge of the light by seeing the mind map on the PPT. The mind map can help the students to say something about the types of the light, the characteristics of the light, the relationship between light and light source, the types of the light source, the characteristics of shadow and the relationship between light, object and shadow. The students can integrate all the scientific knowledge of light all by themselves. The teacher can use some questions to help the students to recall their memories of the knowledge if necessary.

#Thematic Activity 1 (the background knowledge of Shadow Play)

After the integrated activity, the students have deeply known the light and the shadow. The students are ready to know more about the Shadow Play. Provide a passage of Shadow Play to the students. Give them some time to read and finish three tasks. The first task is “read and answer”; the second is “read and judge”; the third is “reader response”. After finishing these three tasks, the students will know what Shadow Play is and how to play the Shadow Play.

#Thematic Activity 2 (teacher’s demonstration of the Shadow Play)

1. The teacher uses two hands to make a bird shadow. Show and describe it to students.

2. The teacher can choose a simple and meaningful story, and then use the shadow puppets, screen and the flashlight to present a Shadow Play to the students. Meanwhile, the teacher can ask some students for help to hold the flashlight and the shadow puppets.

Exploring Activity (students’ demonstration of the Shadow Play)

After the teacher’s demonstration of Shadow Play, the students are fully prepared for the Shadow Play which will be played by them. The teacher can provide some stories for them to choose. After that, the students can cooperate with each other in groups and use the different shadow puppets to present the stories. The preparation time is about 5 minutes. The teacher should encourage the students to create something new in the stories and perform it more confidently.

#Extensive Activity (the other side of the light—light pollution)

Where there is light, there is shadow. The students have already known the importance of them. In order to improve the students’ dialectical logic, the teacher should lead the students to find out the other side of the light by presenting some pictures on the PPT. And the pictures show the light pollution problems. The teacher divides the pictures into three groups. Ask the students to find out the different problems in each group of pictures. And then provide some key words to help the students to find a way to solve the light pollution problems if necessary.

#Developmental Activity (describing shadow):

1. Listen and read the text of “Play with light” for three times.

2. Try to use your hands or other objects to make some shadows and describe them.

3. Write a passage as long as you can: Making full use of light or How to use light correctly.
