Students are from Class 14, Senior 2. They are generally active English learners but not very good at it. When come across difficult issues, they still have some difficulty voicing their own opinions.

Step 1 Lead-in (3min)

T: Before the class, I would like to share with you a story. (show pictures on PPT) Once upon a time, there was a little earthworm named Tony. One day, he was at home alone. Suddenly he felt like playing badminton. But he had nobody to play with him! So he thought about a good idea—to cut himself into two pieces! Then the two halves of him play badminton happily! The next day his sister also felt lonely and felt like playing mahjong, what do you think she might do? Yep she cut himself into four pieces. Then the third day, his father felt like playing football, what do you think he would do next?

Ss: cut himself into many pieces.

T: Maybe. But actually if Tony’s family have been able to use a modern technology, cloning, they can easily do that without cutting themselves!

Lead in the topic with a joke about the little earthworm’s family, which then leads them to thinking about the benefits of human cloning.

Step 2 brainstorming for advantages (5min)

Teacher: So maybe we can clone ourselves to accompany us when we feel lonely, and maybe I can clone another me to help me do the homework when I am tired and feel like to sleep. It is wonderful, isn’t it? So what other benefits do you think cloning can bring us? Two minutes to discuss with your partner and share with the class.

Students have a short brainstorming of the advantages of human cloning to activate pre-existing knowledge.
