Teaching Aims

1.Ability Aim: To improve reading abilities through two passages.

2.Knowledge Aim: To write a short passage with some useful words and expressions.

3.Emotional Aim: To appreciate literature and love reading.

Teaching methods

Methods based on reading : skimming, scanning carefully-reading and group discussion.

Teaching steps

Step1 Leading-in

T: Today let’s talk about something about literature. Do you like reading novels? Ss: Yes\No. T: I like reading, and I learn a lot from reading. What novels have you read? Students own answers. T: Are you familiar with the pictures? Yes\No. T: Especial for this picture,(ppt3) Do you remember the sentence? No sooner had the boy spoken these words than the warden hit him on the head with the spoon. Oliver asks for more. After that, Oliver was locked in a room. Let’s watch the video. (play a video) After watching the video, do you know what will happen to Olive? So please open your book, and turn to page14.Let’s read passage 1 Oliver Twist –Chapter Three.(ppt4)

Step2 Fast reading1.

Read the passage and answer the questions: ( ppt5 )1, After being locked in a cellar, how was Oliver treated? 2.How do they get the boys in the chimney come down quickly? Check the right answers.

Step3 Discussion

Read the passage again and answer the questions:( ppt6) 1. List two reasons why Mr. Gamfield wanted to get Oliver? 2.Do you think Mr. Gamfield would get the boy at last and why? Check the right answers. T: Do you know what Mr. Gamfield is?(play a video)ok, in the second question, we know Mr. Gamfield would get the boy at last. But this is the result in the literature. We know some good literature can be made into some films. Oliver Twist is also made into a famous film. Let’s watch the result in the film. (play a video)Are you surprised? So look at the picture, (ppt7) do you know who he is? This is Charles Dickens, he is a great writer, and he has written many good books. Have you read some of them? Let’s watch a video. (play a video), ok ,let’s look at the pictures.(ppt8)One is Oliver, and the other is Pip. Why are Oliver and Pip so similar? Because Dickens has the similar childhood. So let’s read the passage two ,The Childhood of Charles Dickens(ppt9)

Step4 Reading comprehension

T:Now read the short passage, and try to answer the questions.(ppt10)Let’s check the right answers. I think the questions are easy. Don’t you want to challenge yourself? Please read the passage again and discuss the next questions.(ppt11)ok ,From the two passages ,we can draw the conclusion, look at the blackboard.(ppt12)So we should catch the points while doing the exercise. Now let’s start another happy journey: correct mistakes.

Step5 Exercise

Step6 Writing

Now let’s go on. We have leant something about Oliver ,and we just watched several videos. Charles Dickens is great, so is Li An, a famous director. We have learned the film review about Crouching Tiger, hidden Dragon, and today we learn to write another film review about Life of Pi. Have you see the film? Please look at the blackboard and learn some details about the film Life of Pi.(ppt15) ok ,let’s learn how to write a film review. Look at the blackboard(ppt16) ,and I think you can finish the task easily. Time is limited, so you can finish the task after class.

Step7 Homework
