I. Background knowledge

In 1882 a baby girl caught a fever that was so fierce she nearly died. She survived but the fever left its mark — she could no longer see or hear.

II. Read the first and last paragraph

Two characters: Helen & Miss Sullivan

Relation: student and teacher

Age of Helen

*The most important day I remember is the one on which…

*It would have been difficult to find a happier child than I was as I lay in my bed …, for the first time, longed for a new day to come.

(relate to students’ experience)

III. Read para 2 to para 6

First meeting:

Pick out some v. to show Helen’s feeling at that time.

And what kind person was Miss Sullivan.

First word learned:

What is the first word she learned?

How did she learn?

Did she really understand it?

First word understood:

What is the first word she understood?

How did Miss Sullivan make her understand it? How many times did she try?

First feeling of regret and sorrow:

IV. Why was it the most important day?
