Teacher: The task you have today is to make an exhibition board for the music festival. Your exhibition board should be about a composer. A composer is someone who writes music. To make your exhibition board, you will need to do several things. First, you will need to collect information about some composers. When you have collected that, you can choose which composer you would like to write about. You’re probably wondering what information you need to find out. You need to find out about when and where he or she was born and died. Those things are very important. Another thing you need to know is where they came from, for example, from Europe or the USA. The next thing to find out is what style of music they composed. You will also need to find out those special things that happened in their lives such as getting married or writing their first piece of music. Another important thing is anything that influenced them. You will remember that Puccini was very interested in East Asia and that is why he wrote Madam Butterfly and Turandot. Finally, you should write the names of their most famous works.

Radio host: Welcome to Great Musicians. Today, the subjects of our programme are three composers who lived in three different centuries—the eighteenth, the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries. Two of them are European and one is American. Their names are Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Paul Simon. Before we listen to some of their music, let’s just find out a little about them.

Mozart was born in Austria in the eighteenth century. He was truly talented. He composed classical music and had his first piece of music published in seventeen sixty-four at the age of eight, and he composed his first opera at the age of twelve in seventeen sixty-eight.

The next composer on my list is Tchaikovsky. As a classical music composer, he wrote many symphonies and he is famous for writing the music for the ballet Swan Lake. He was Russian and was born in eighteen forty. He helped compose a song when he was just four years old.

Finally, we come to Paul Simon. He has written many famous songs, perhaps the most famous of which is ‘Bridge over Troubled Waters’. He is a composer of today! Born in nineteen forty-one, he is one of the best pop music writers in the USA.

Now that we have had some background information, let’s move to our first piece of music for today. It is by Mozart and comes from his famous opera, The Magic Flute.
