Thoughts on the design:

本单元Task的主线为设计京剧脸谱。通过各个环节的活动,培养学生听、说、读、写的能力,分两个课时完成。此课件为第一课时,由三个教学步骤组成,着重培养学生听和读的技能。第一步:学习描写性格的形容词,并通过听力材料了解京剧社新戏中各人物的性格特点。从学习相关词汇引入,为学生的听力练习做好词汇上的准备。第二步:根据演员和导演的对话以及剧中人物的特点,为该演员选定角色。两个听力练习,是学生对信息摘录——分析——提出结论的过程,第三步:阅读短文,了解京剧脸谱中颜色的含义,并为该角色设计脸谱。学生在完成任务的同时不仅在现实的情景中反复操练了新词汇,还了解了作为国粹的京剧。

Teaching aims:

After learning this lesson, students will be able to learn adjectives describing people’s personality and practice listening as well as reading skills. They will also learn about Beijing opera masks.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Skills building 1:

understanding adjectives describing characteristics or personality

Ask Ss to describe their partners using three adjectives. ( PPT 4)

Collect Ss’ answers and group them, pointing out some adjectives describe appearance while others are about personality. (PPT 5)

Encourage Ss to give more adjectives describing personality and list them on the BB. (PPT 6)

Get Ss to work in groups of 4, guessing Chinese equivalents of adjectives and their opposites on P42 according to the given definitions in English.

Show Ss the answers and get them to read after the teacher. (PPT 7)

[Explanation]

从学生已知的描述人的形容词开始,引入到形容性格的这一类别的形容词。从学生已知的知识引到课本中列出的9组词汇。学生先理解英文解释并猜词义,再提供答案供学生参考,最后通过跟读加深记忆。

Step 2 Getting to know the characters

Ask Ss to read the instructions in part A on P42 to know about the task. ( PPT 8)

Get Ss to listen to the playwrighter talking about the different characters in the new play and write down each character’s personality. Listen to it again if necessary.

3. Let Ss check with their parteners before checking the answers in class. (PPT 9 )

[Explanation]

了解任务的大背景和第一个小任务,明确听力练习中需要搜集的信息。与同桌讨论后再检查答案,以增加学生信心。可根据学生能力听一遍或两遍。

Step 3 Choosing a role for the performer.

Get Ss to read the instructions in part B on P43. (PPT 10)

Make sure Ss have no difficulty understanding the given adjectives. Give simple definition or synonyms/antonyms to remind Ss, if necessary.

Tell Ss to circle the words describing his last role while listening, pointing out they may not hear the exact words but sometimes words with similar meanings.

Get Ss to listen for wanted information. Play the tape twice, if necessary.
