Expressing Opinions

Curriculum Standards Analysis

The new English curriculum strives to accomplish far more than just help students learn English. At one level learning English should involve helping students to develop a certain level of comprehensive language competence and the ability to use language for real communication, to master certain basic language knowledge, to master listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

However, at another level the curriculum should also serve students’ all-round development, providing them with opportunities to strengthen their interest in studying English, to grow in self-discipline, perseverance and self-confidence, to improve their cooperative, investigative and thinking abilities, to adopt good study habits and effective learning strategies, to establish both national spirit and an awareness of and respect for cultural differences. In our teaching plan or in our class, we should remember all the basic principles and try to meet these principles by various activities and tasks.

In this class, the teacher designs speaking and writing task which will meet the basic requirements of the new English curriculum. In addition, the teacher will arrange games, pictures and competition which will help to arouse students’ and serve students’ all-round development.

Exam Outline Analysis

In the college entrance exam, English exam will test your basic knowledge and skills. Words and expressions will be part of the basic knowledge. So, the teacher should pay more attention to these and ask the students to remember them. To the skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are all needed here. Hence, we should practice all of these in our class. In this class, the teacher designs speaking and writing task. It will help to improve their abilities. The writing part-what is beauty in your eyes- is always one of the compositions in the college entrance exam. It is really necessary to practice it.

Learner Analysis

The students have been in senior high school for half term. They have good basic reading skills. However, they are weak in speaking and writing for various reasons.

Firstly, some students don’t know how to express themselves clearly in both speaking and writing part. Secondly, they can’t understand what others say in listening and don’t know how to catch the key words to fill in the blanks, so listening-design is a good way to practice their listening abilities. Lastly, they lack necessary skills or confidence. Hence, more practice is needed and more skills should be taught to students.

Teaching Content Analysis

Expressing opinions is the theme of speaking and listening in this unit. It will tell us different ways to show your opinions. It is quite useful for students to show their opinions in the daily life. But it’s also important for students to write a composition to express their opinions in college entrance examination. Hence, in this class, the students are required to speak their opinions out, help teacher to design listening blanks and then write down their opinions in a group--- what is beauty in your eyes?
