I. Answer the following questions

What was Tom supposed to do that day?

II. Detail reading How did Tom make Ben work for him? Read the descriptions and use verbs to summarise what Tom did. ?

Tom surveyed his last touch with the eye of an artist, then he gave his brush another gentle sweep and surveyed the result, as before.

Tom swept his brush back and forth -- stepped back to note the effect -- added a touch here and there -- criticised the effect again --

pretend to be enjoying his work

Ignore/pay no attention/ stick to ..

but he stuck to his work.

Tom wheeled suddenly and said:

"Why, it's you, Ben! I wasn't noticing."
