Listen to the dialogue and ask: What pet do they keep?
Listen again and ask: How do they look after their pet?
Read the dialogue together.
Step1. Presentation
Ask: What animals do people usually keep as pets? Watch a short video and answer the questions.
Ask: What’s that in English? How much does a tortoise weigh? Help the students to answer: It can weigh up to 2000 grams and grow up to be 25 centimetres long. Teach the phrases “weigh up to” and “grow up to be”. Compare with the dog.
Ask: Among all these pets, which do you think is the easiest to keep?
Say: Today we are going to listen to a talk on goldfish. What do you want to know about goldfish?
Step5 Listening
1. T: Listen to the talk and judge T or F, if it is false, try to correct it.
Before listening, give some listening tips. Check the answer.
Listen again and fill the blanks. Also give the students some listening tips.
Step6 Practice
Ask: Do you have a good memory? Ask the students to practice in pairs. And ask some of the students to repeat the sentences.
Ask: Are goldfish quiet or do they make any noise? Teach the word “noise”. Make a dialogue about goldfish according the key words. Work in pairs and ask some pairs to act it out.
Listen to another passage about a pet cat and try to fill in the blanks
Step7 A guessing game
Show the sentences one by one and guess what pet it is.
Step8 Group work
Classify the information about goldfish like “place”, “food”, “size” and “colour”.
Work in groups and talk about themselves as a pet. Each group choose one pet to discuss. Try to talk about the “place”, “food”, “size” , “colour”, “name” and “hobby”.
Ask some students to come to the front to give a talk.
Say: Maybe your pets are just part of your life, but you are everything to your pets. So please love them and take good care of them.
Step9 Assignment
1. Find more information about how to look after your favourite pet.
2. Design a poster and show people how to protect a pet.
