How to form new words with suffix-ly

Teaching steps:

Step I. Lead in

To talk about Nancy’s and John’s school lives, ask students to read and answer some easy questions.

They discuss the books with each other happily.

My friend Tony often listens to my problems carefully and offers me help.

设计意图:借助单元话题,从Reading课文入手,谈论学生们熟知的美国和英国的校园生活,令学生不紧张,迅速进入课堂环节,同时借助课文句子,很快出现今天上课内容。

Step II. Presentation

Explain the suffix “-ly” in adverbs

Show the examples of words ending with “-ly” and work out ways to form adverbs. Have a discuss in a small group. Four students a group.

Then try to form more new words and complete short articles. The articles are about their own school life.

Have a summary, adverbs can modify verbs, adjectives and some other adverbs.

设计意图:小组合作,通过例词的呈现,可以帮助学生们自己总结形容词变副词的方式,自己归纳后缀-ly的用法。为了巩固效果,让学生进行更多单词的训练,然后结合他们自己的学校生活活动,让他们在真实语境中使用以上单词。

Step III. Presentation

Explain the suffix “-ly” in adjectives. Show some examples: (1)They have a yearly Reading Week.

(2) Tony is friendly enough to help me.

Explain how to use the suffix “-ly” to form adjectives. Make a summary, adjectives modify nouns.

Complete their own school life activities with correct adjectives.

设计意图:同样在例句中呈现名词+ly之后变成形容词的用法,学生根据情境理解之后,讨论名词变形容词的用法,同时完成介绍自己学校生活的文章。

Step IV. Practice

1. Enjoy a story and try to circle (圈出) the words with suffixes.

2. Finish the exercise on page 27 of the students’ books.

3. Complete an article with correct words.
