2. To shape students’ multicultural awareness.

Focal points:

To clarify the structure of the passage and explore the theme of music without boundaries.

Difficult points:

To lead students to grasp the theme and get familiar with biographical literary style.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Pre-reading

Task One:Have an interview

In this stage, an interview is briefly done to get the students review words and expressions learned in the last lesson, especially the three art forms literature, music and film, since music is the theme of the reading material and the article is written in biographical literary style. Film can be a smooth transition to today’s main character Tan Dun.

Task Two: Discuss Tan Dun's Music works

As the background music for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon are discussed, the introduction for the other two musical works are naturally followed. The students are encouraged to talk about what they can hear in the music and also their feelings about the sounds. Then, the students are guided to find more information about the works through fast reading. In this process, students’ interest is aroused and can get exposed to new vocabulary in context. This task can recycle and consolidate the vocabulary and activate their background knowledge, which lays the foundation for their further reading.

Step 2 While-reading

Task Three: The structure

Since students’ interest has been aroused, it is natural for them to skim for the answers in Task 3, which is in accordance with the biographical literary style mentioned in task one. They can cooperate with each other in pairs to solve the problem. With the help of the flow chart, they are supposed to take hold of the clue of the passage so that they have a deeper understanding of Tan Dun and his works.

Task Four: Something special about Tan Dun

Students will discuss the questions about Tan Dun’s rationale and locate the supporting sentences in the text book. Of course, scanning is the reading strategy suitable for this task.

Task Five: The influence of Tan Dun’s education

In task five, students will have to fill in the blanks of Tan Dun’ s educational experience. Then, the communicative learning method is employed. The students are expected to discuss in pairs to work out the influence of Tan Dun’s education. The teacher will assist the students by propose the questions like “What are the main stages of Tan Dun’s education?” “What characteristics do they each have?”

Task Six: Tan Dun’s music rationale

Another question “What does Tan Dun mean by saying “My music is to dream without boundaries”” is asked to lead students to explore the purpose of writing, to read beyond the lines and to interact with the writer. After reexamine the last paragraph and thorough discussion, the students are able to grasp the essence of music without boundaries and meanwhile their multi-culture awareness will be to some extent upgraded.

Task 7: Let’s play!

In this task, students will be divided into groups and play a game. Each group will have a chance to choose one game to play which is also designed to facilitate students to fully understand the passage. As you can see, there are translation practice and question solving exercises. The students are motivated in group competition.

Step 3: Post Reading

Task 7 : Brainstorming

Based on the previous exercise, students are now linguistically and psychologically ready for output. Therefore, I propose the question “What makes Tan Dun so successful?” for them to brainstorm so that students can learn and consolidate the target language by using it in the authentic context.

To lead the students to talk more, some possible answers are presented. Students are required to discuss in groups and then try to give a short report about Tan Dun’s success. Biographical literary style is recommended and still multicultural awareness will be especially stressed.

Step 4 Assigning homework

Homework must include written and oral forms. To develop a good learning habit, students review and preview.

Blackboard design

In the middle part of the blackboard is the unit topic. On the left side, there is some new vocabulary. On the right side, it is the structure of the passage.
