Now let’s share.

informal unimportant light polite friendly ordinary social…

Since we’ve known the features of small talk, do you know where small talk usually happens? Let have a look at the pictures. In which photo do you think they are making small talk? (informal occasions, such as……)

So from the features and the places where small talk happens, we may conclude that small talk is a polite friendly informal conversation about unimportant subjects on informal occasions.

Step2: A short video

1. Next I will show you a short video.

In the video we can know many useful things about small talk. Now it’s our turn to learn how we can develop our social skills. And to answer the questions like how good are your social skills? What skills do we need to make small talk?

Go over the passage within 30 seconds then tell me. Don’t forget to focus on subtitles if there are any.

2. Read carefully about the first skill and choose the best answer to the question. Good! You see openers for small talk should be light, relaxing and low-risk.

3. Besides learning to do small talk or how to speak, developing your listening skills is also in urgent need. What can you do and what can’t you do as a listener? Read about the second skill carefully. Don’t forget to underline some key words. After reading, observe each picture and match each one with the related statement in the text. For example, picture1 is for ask for … to show your interest.

So much for you, let’s look at the pictures together. ……Ok, let’s conclude that these 3 pictures you can use, but these 6 pictures you can’t copy.

4. Now there is another skill left. That is learn the rules. Read last part and learn more about the local rules.

From this passage we learnt a lot of social skills for small talk, which include listening skills and one of speaking techniques, that is, how to start talking with some low-risk conversation starters. But there are still some speaking techniques missing. What are they? Can you infer? (how to continue talking/ high-risk conservation starters)

5. After reading three passages, you’ve got some social skills in doing small talk. Now it’s time for us to review by filling in the blanks with a proper word or phrase.

Step4: Put the social skills into use.

Practice and perform.
