Focusing Skill : listening and Speaking

Analyses of Teaching Material:

This lesson is designed according to the theme of module 5 unit5, first aid. In this lesson, what I focus is not on how to give first aid, but on how the students avoid accidents in campus, promoting the students’ awareness of protecting themselves by modifying their daily behaviors. Meanwhile the design is aimed at training students' listening and oral communication ability . In order to enhance the efficiency, vocabulary support is provided through the whole lesson and the activities are designed to suit the students . The lesson consists of three parts: brainstorming, listening and speaking, solving problem by making a list of safety rules.

In the first part, I begin the brainstorming section by talking about students’ great achievement in school sports meeting, inspiring their bravery in overcoming their barriers in learning English and meanwhile motivate their interest in talking about injuries when they are doing training or living around school. Then introduce some expressions relevant to injuries, such as names of the injuries and the causes of the injuries, presented as expression support of the listening and speaking. The listening material is about an accident in school. Listening skill is present in this part. The last part involves taking notes, speaking and presentation. In this part, students learn to share their ideas and repeat mechanically the sentence patterns and then form the habit of speak out with full sentences and even with a text.

The outcome of the whole lesson will be a report, fostering Ss teamwork spirit and promote their passion in solving problem by using target languages.

Students’ strength and weakness:

Students of this class are from the special P.E class, who are physically energetic and willing to try any interesting activity such as singing and imitating, but refuse to solve language problems involving critical thinking. They have very low learning achievement and lack positive motivation in learning English as well. 4-5 of them know only 26 alphabet letters and sometimes have negative behaviors. I try to scaffold the language and create a comfortable and less competitive studying environment for them all, offering chances for them to promote their self-esteem. In this lesson, I will try to use the progressive and task-based approach and the bottom-up way to encourage students to use language step by step. I will also help students to accumulate more useful expressions by constructing interesting situation.

Students have :

learned the pronunciation of words in this unit and the common knowledge of injuries.

recalled the action verbs relevant to the causes of different injuries in self-learning plan.

made a survey and interview each others.

Knowledge Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

--- give a presentation of safety rules after several activities such as listening to a story and discussing the results of the survey.
