2. judge the writing purpose and the intended reader of the passage.

3. express ideas through critical thinking.

Main teaching points: 1. Through text analysis, help the students to know the history of the Amber Room and its different roles in history.

2. Further understand the text for the writing purpose, intended readers, and text structure.

Difficult teaching points: Analyze the passage structure and express their ideas about rebuilding the Amber Room.

Teaching methods: Task-based language teaching;

Communicative teaching method

Teaching aid: The multi-media computer

Teaching procedures:

Step1. Leading in. (Let the students interested in the class.)

Part 1: Watch a short news report about Notre Dame Cathedral fire to let students know many cultural relics suffer a lot in history such as the Amber Room.

Part 2: Get students know what is amber and its features and get the brief that the Amber Room is extremely valuable and precious.

Part 3: Predict the contents through the title: In search of the Amber Room

Step 2. Text Analysis

Part 1: The analysis of the first paragraph

Firstly, choose one student read the first sentence and let students find the key words which can predict what would talk about in the following text.

“Frederick William I, the king of Prussia, could never have imagined that his greatest gift to the Russian people would have such an amazing history.”

Secondly, guide students to figure out that the topic of this paragraph is the greatest gift and the topic of the second part is an amazing history.

Thirdly, read the following sentences to know what aspects did the author describe the Amber Room? To help them find the answers, ask students to underline useful information on their text. (material, color, design, decoration, maker, time cost, birthplace)

Part 2: The analysis of the following paragraphs

Firstly, read Para.2-5 and find out different owners of the Amber Room and what did they do in this amazing history. (Frederick I--- Frederick William I---Peter the Great---Catharine II---Nazi---Russians)

Secondly, read these paragraphs again and figure out the different roles of the Amber Rom or its fate in each period. ( palace---gift---reception hall---one wonder---victim to the war---museum)
