Step 1. Lead-in

Little humor

Am. BOY : Could I use your bathroom?

Br. BOY: Of course , let me give you a clean towel.

Am. BOY : Oh , I’m sorry , but I didn’t mean to take a shower.

Question: Do you know what’s the misunderstanding between them?—difference between American English and British English.

Step2 American English Vs British English

1. a video about American English and British English

watch the video and try to list as many differences as possible mentioned in the dialogue.

2. Ask students to go through the examples listed on page 26 and find out in which aspects the American English and British English differ. If possible, invite some students to summarize the differences.

3. more examples about the differences between Am.E and Br.E, including differences in pronunciation.

4. some cultural differences.

step 3 Colloquialisms

1. What is a colloquialism and guess the meanings of two colloquialisms.

2. Part A on Page27. Introduce some sources if possible and try to ask students to make up sentences using the colloquialisms.

3. More examples to guess the meaning of the colloquialisms through the words used.

4. Part B on Page 27. Make some expansion of some other colloquialisms with similar words.

5. Summary and consolidation.

Step 4 Homework

1. Memorize the differences in Am.E & Br.E

2. Find more colloquialisms in you after-class exercise.
