Teaching procedures:

Task 1 American VS British English

Step 1 Lead-in

Teacher: As we all know, all the people in America and Britain speak English. However, there are some differences between American English and British English. Some people may feel confused and if you don’t know the differences, there will be some misunderstanding.

Step 2 Differences between American English and British English

1. Vocabulary

(1) Enjoy a video about the differences between American & British English and answer the questions below.

= 1 ﹨ GB3 ﹨ MERGEFORMAT ① Where does the woman come from?

= 2 ﹨ GB3 ﹨ MERGEFORMAT ② Where has the man been to recently?

= 3 ﹨ GB3 ﹨ MERGEFORMAT ③ How does the woman feel at the beginning when the man says“Hey! Nice pants!”? Why?

(2) Watch the video again and write down the right words for British English according to the given words.

(3) Look at some pictures and learn more words. Pay attention to the pronunciation of bathroom.

2. Pronunciations

(1) Watch a short part of Harry Potter. Enjoy the pronunciation of British English. Listen to the pronunciation of “Of cause.”

Then listen to a speech by Obama. Listen carefully to the American pronunciation. Listen to the pronunciation of “chance” and “neither”.

(2) Give them some examples. Ask one student to read them. And then read the words together after the teacher.

3. Spelling

Teacher: As we can see, the same meaning can be expressed in different words. However, we often see words like color and colour. In fact, they have the same meaning, despite spelling differences.

(1) Compare pairs of words in the form and try to find the differences.

(2) Remember the rules and have a test. Ask some students to write the words on the blackboard.

4. Grammar

Teacher: Last but not least, we should not ignore the differences in pronunciation between American English and British English.

(1) Listen to a song and fill in the blanks. Tell them the difference of the two expressions “Have you...”and “Do you have...?”

(2) Show them more examples.

Ask them to read the sentences together, and pay attention to the difference in grammar.
