Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Lead-in
Enjoy a video and arise the interest of Africa.
Purpose: Introduce the topic to generate various answers, making it a good chance to activate students’ knowledge store and get them fully involved in it.
Step 2 Pre-reading
Reading strategy --- How to read an informal letter.
Purpose: Introduce this reading strategy to make students know the style of the article and read it in a certain way.
Step 3 Fast reading
1. Guide students to answer three questions.
2. Get the students to read each paragraph quickly and found out the main idea.
Purpose: Apply various skills instructed in this period to improve their reading ability. Develop the ability to analyze and generalize materials.
Step 4 Careful reading
Ask the students to read each paragraph more carefully to get detailed information, and then show the following exercises for them to finish:
Finish Toby’s travel route.
Finish Task-based reading.
Choose the right answer.
Purpose: Through various practice, help students master the author’s writing ideas; Develop students’ ability to get and process information; Improve the ability of analysis and comprehension. Develop students’ integrated language skills and the spirit of team cooperation.
Step 5 Post-reading activities
1. Interview.
2. Discussion:
Do you think it is worth risking your life for adventure?
Purpose: Cultivate students’ team spirit and develop their imagination, which can bring students chances of using real communicative English.
