Teaching Aims(教学目标):
1. Knowledge aim: Students will be able to recognize and use some new words, and can describe an adventure by the end of this lesson.
2. Skill Aim: Students can identify the features of an informal letter, grasp some reading strategies and retell the text.
3. Emotional Aim: Inspire students’ desire and curiosity for travelling around. Students will want to explore the foreign countries after this lesson.
Key Points(重点):
Get the students to master the useful expressions of the text;
Help the students to have a general idea about the whole passage and know the travel route of Toby.
Difficult point(难点):
Stimulate students’ independent reading using the reading strategies;
Help the students to retell the text using some hints.
Teaching procedures(教学过程):
Step 1 Lead-in
1. Enjoy a short video about Africa.
2. Answer questions: What do you know about Africa? What have you seen in the video?
Suggested answers: wild animals, desert, rainforest and so on.
Step 2 Reading strategy
1. Ask the students skim the passage and tell the form of the passage.
2. Show a sample of the informal letter and hope students can have a visual concept about the features of the informal letter.
An informal letter: date, greeting, body, closing and signature.
Step 3 Pre-reading
Show some pictures about Africa and some famous scenic spots in Africa, asking them to guess the names, which will lay a foundation for students’ further reading. Help students to get familiar with some new words.
Suggested answers: the Sahara Desert, the River Nile, Mount Kilimanjaro, the Himalayas and so on.
